Designed for the toughest and most secure environments with a focus on ease of installation, the ProtEx range from Exmesh Engineering offers not just high-performance protection for a wide variety of sites, but one that looks great too.
Muhammad Short, the company’s Business Development Manager, explained what sets ProtEx apart: “The expanded metal mesh is made from a single sheet of steel that is slit and stretched, which means there are no joins, welds or weak points that could be frayed, broken, or tampered with. This makes it exceptionally secure compared to other fencing options. But added to that, it gives a really aesthetically pleasing mesh, challenging the perception that security has to look industrial.”
Beyond its strength and looks, the production process at Exmesh Engineering in Hartlepool’s manufacturing facility is highly efficient and environmentally friendly, generating minimal waste.
Muhammad added: “The system is easy to install and unlike most mesh systems, can be raked over uneven ground without the need for stepping.
Matching gates can be fitted with access control locks and Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) can be seamlessly integrated, which is key as we understand how important both data and integration is becoming in the physical security world. As the ProtEx range is accredited up to LPS 1175 SR3, this along with the integration ensures an incredibly high security and practical solution.”
Balancing security with aesthetics
According to Muhammad, the ProtEx range is not only a robust high security solution but also a very cost-effective alternative to traditional fencing options, he said: “It looks fantastic while providing outstanding protection.”
Exmesh Engineering offers three distinct variations of ProtEx security fencing, each designed for specific security needs:
ExMesh ProtEx 1: A certified perimeter security solution ideal for warehouses, distribution centres, telecom infrastructure, mobile phone masts, retail sites and more. Certified to LPS 1175 A1 (Issue 8), it is an affordable alternative to wire mesh and palisade fencing. Its anti-climb design and ability to be installed on sloping ground without stepping make it an excellent choice for various terrains.
ExMesh ProtEx 2: Designed for high security sites, this fencing system was one of the first in the UK to gain LPCB SR2 (now B3) accreditation. Featuring Exmesh Engineering’s unique UK made mesh with a unique post-stringer design, it offers an additional deterrent against intruders while delivering superior perimeter defence.
ExMesh ProtEx 3: One of the UK’s few high security fencing systems to receive LPCB SR3 accreditation under LPS 1175, this option includes pedestrian and vehicle gates for enhanced site access control.
Tailored Solutions
Exmesh Engineering’s strength also lies in its ability to deliver truly bespoke solutions when a standard “off-the-shelf” option simply isn’t viable. We understand that every site has its own operational demands, risk profile and environmental constraints. Our in-house design and manufacturing teams work closely with clients and the globally recognised third party accreditation board BRE (LPCB) to adapt our ProtEx range of high security fencing and gate systems to unusual layouts, restricted access points, or challenging ground conditions.
The ProtEx range is perfectly suited for protecting everything from radioactive materials to high-security data centres, thanks to its unique combination of exceptional security and an open mesh design that allows airflow and clear visibility of the assets being safeguarded. For facilities requiring uninterrupted operations and uncompromising protection, we have the expertise to integrate advanced technologies and engineer systems that deliver total security. This can include creating custom mesh sizes, applying specialist coatings for corrosive or hazardous environments and developing gate systems tailored to work seamlessly with specific access control protocols.
We also appreciate that for critical sites, security is more than just a barrier – it’s a holistic approach involving physical defence, electronic monitoring, and operational resilience. Our engineers can adapt ProtEx systems to work seamlessly with your specific requirement, resulting in a tailored, accredited and aesthetically considered solution that performs exactly as needed, wherever it’s installed and whatever the operational challenges may be.
The London Crossrail Scheme
The effectiveness of the ProtEx range was demonstrated in the London Crossrail scheme’s Victoria Dock project, where ProtEx 3 was chosen to enhance security.
Muhammad explained: “ExMesh Engineering was appointed by Crossrail contractor Newton and Frost Fencing Ltd to design and manufacture bespoke pedestrian emergency exit gates. We produced custom gates and fencing using cut to-size mesh panels to create 2.4m and 3m high base-plated structures with a sleek black powder-coated finish.”
A key innovation in this project was the integration of high security locks from Mico Tindall, featuring single deadlocking mechanisms. He added: “This marked the first time these high security locks were used with the ExMesh Engineering security range and highlighted Exmesh Engineering’s ability to react positively to new and bespoke projects.”
With its advanced design, robust protection and cost-effectiveness, the ProtEx range is shaping the future of security fencing. Whether securing critical infrastructure, industrial sites or major construction projects, ExMesh Engineering continues to raise the bar in perimeter defence.
